How Heineken Transforms Forgotten Urban Roofs into Social Hubs

Heineken is redefining urban experiences by turning forgotten city rooftops into vibrant social spaces. The Rooftop Revival initiative combats urban loneliness and promotes real-life connections in densely populated cities.

Addressing Urban Isolation

Research shows that over 57% of city dwellers in major metropolises — including Seoul, London, Tokyo, and New York — often feel lonely despite living in bustling environments. In Seoul, 53% of residents feel the city is designed for productivity rather than social interaction, while 37% report a lack of public spaces for meeting others.

Heineken’s Rooftop Revival, created with LePub agency, transforms these overlooked rooftops into cultural hubs, creative spaces, and community gathering points.

Creative Rooftop Experiences

The project marked hidden rooftops with red stars on green cityscapes, inviting locals to discover and visit transformed spaces. The rooftops hosted:

  • Live music events, such as DINO from SEVENTEEN
  • Local art workshops
  • Food tasting sessions with local chefs
  • Traditional-inspired installations like pyeong-sang wooden platforms

Photographer Tom Hegen documented the rooftop transformations, providing visual content for Heineken’s ongoing marketing campaigns.

Marketing with Purpose

Nabil Nasser, Heineken’s Global Head, says:
“We can’t rebuild cities, but we can inspire people to see their surroundings differently. By transforming forgotten rooftops into lively spaces, we create environments where people can connect, celebrate, and share experiences.”

Bruno Bertelli from LePub adds:
“Urban space is limited. Revitalizing overlooked areas into social hubs is key to building community in modern cities.”

The campaign’s visual metaphor — a red star against green rooftops — is instantly recognizable, reflecting Heineken’s commitment to socially responsible marketing.

Combating Loneliness in the Digital Age

Heineken has previously addressed urban loneliness with campaigns like:

  • The Boring App, encouraging focus on music instead of smartphones
  • The Flipper, a smartphone case that flips the screen down when someone says “cheers”

Through Rooftop Revival, Heineken reinforces authentic human connections, positioning the brand as a pioneer in experience-driven marketing and urban engagement.
