Chicken — Magic Body Control

Hands move a chicken around. The chicken's head stays perfectly, eerily still. Cut to: that's how Mercedes' suspension works. A 60-second visual metaphor that you remember a decade later.

The story

Mercedes needed to demonstrate Magic Body Control, an active suspension system that keeps the cabin level regardless of what the wheels are doing on a bumpy road. Instead of CGI animations of springs and dampers, the agency filmed a chicken. Or rather, they filmed several chickens — birds have a vestibulo-ocular reflex so strong that their heads stay perfectly fixed in space when their bodies are moved. Hands push, pull, lift, and rotate the chicken; the head doesn't move a millimetre. Cut to a Mercedes gliding over potholes. Cut to the tagline. Sixty seconds, one perfect analogy, no engineering jargon. The ad has been viewed over 50 million times across YouTube uploads, and is now used in design schools as the gold standard for explaining a complex feature with a single visual.

Why it worked

It replaced the engineering pitch with a metaphor so vivid it does the explaining for you.

Takeaway for marketers

If you can find the perfect analogy for your feature, you don't need to explain the feature.
