What is GEO?

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the practice of making your business easy for AI assistants to understand, trust and cite. Instead of fighting for a blue link, you become the source ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews quote when someone asks about your category.

Why it matters now

More and more research now ends inside an assistant's answer instead of on a results page. If the model does not know who you are, what you sell and why you are credible, it recommends someone else — and the user never sees your site to judge for themselves. GEO is how you get into that answer.

How to start: the basics

  1. Baseline your visibility. Write 20–30 real buying prompts and record what each assistant answers, who it names and which sources it cites.
  2. Make your facts extractable. Clear headings, short answer-first paragraphs, comparison tables, explicit pricing, locations and specs — not vague brand poetry.
  3. Fix entity clarity. One consistent name, description and category across your site, structured data (Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article) and every profile you control.
  4. Earn third-party corroboration. Models weigh what others say about you — listings, reviews, press, directories, community threads.
  5. Let AI crawlers in. Keep robots.txt open to GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and friends, and publish an llms.txt summary of your site.
  6. Re-measure monthly. Answers drift as models update, so treat share of answers as a tracked metric, not a one-off project.

Frequently asked questions

What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: optimizing content so AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews understand, trust and cite it in their answers.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO competes for ranked links on a results page. GEO competes to be the source inside a generated answer. Rankings still matter as an input, but the deliverable is a citation or mention, not a blue link.
Is GEO the same as AI SEO or AISO?
In practice yes. GEO, AI SEO and AISO all describe optimizing for AI answer engines. The tactics overlap heavily: clear structure, extractable facts, entity clarity, structured data and third-party corroboration.
How do you measure GEO?
You measure share of answers: how often a brand is mentioned or cited for a set of prompts across assistants, which competitors appear instead, and which sources the model pulled from. It is prompt-based tracking, not keyword-rank tracking.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. AI answers are largely assembled from indexable web content, so technical SEO, crawlability and authority remain prerequisites. GEO adds a layer focused on machine extraction and citation.
